Gilbert Charles Stuart, an American portrait painter (1755-1828), grew up in Newport, R.I., where he studied painting before going to London in 1775. There he became the pupil of another American painter, Benjamin West, and was much influenced by the work of the English portrait painters Thomas Gainsborough and Sir Joshua Reynolds. In 1792 Stuart returned to the U.S., heavily in debt due to an extravagant life-style. He attempted to recoup his fortunes by painting rapidly and making many copies of his painting including those of George Washington. His portraits number nearly 1000 and brought him brought him fame. Stuart also did portraits of Presidents John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, and James Madison and of the British kings George III and George IV.

Stuart sold many copies of the portraits that he, his daughter Jane, and others made. Stuart moved to Boston, Massachusetts in 1805 and became noted for his charm, his ability to complete portraits quickly, and his advice to young artists.
